FALL 2024
"Paul urges a new way of inhabiting the city of man through examples of joyful humility. He begins with his own situation. His imprisonment has served to advance the gospel, and in this he rejoices (1:1–26). He calls them to also live as kingdom citizens (1:27–2:4), using Jesus as the ultimate example in the Christ hymn (2:5–18). Then he turns to Timothy and Epaphroditus, who also gave up comforts for the gospel (2:19–30), and concludes with warnings against false teachers contrasted with his own example of service and sacrifice (3:1–4:1). Finally, he exhorts them to unity and speaks of the fellowship they have in Christ (4:2–23). Humility, joy, and unity are marks of kingdom citizens."
